Responsibilities: This EH&S generalist position will be responsible for the environmental, health, and safety functions for the Rochester facility with dotted line assistance for 4 other locations. Will identify and assess occupational safety, health, and environmental risks that affecting employees. Recommends corrective action to mitigate risk and accident occurrence. Will design and implement the annual safety plan, promote a culture of safety, and develop and maintain positive working relationships with employees. Will direct all safety, health, and environmental activities as required by OSHA and EPA

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 6-8 years experience as an EH&S generalist in manufacturing. Master’s degree preferred. Must have a proven background in leading improvements with high employee participation and recognition.

Compensation: Base compensation to $90K, bonus, a comprehensive package of corporate benefits, and full relocation coverage.

Safety Officer (5/20/08)

Workforce Solutions Group is looking for Safety Officers for a client in environmental remediation services.

This position directs the Safety and Compliance affairs of the Branch and maintains close communication with management in matters of safety, health and regulatory compliance.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure compliance with all company standard operating procedures, written safety policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews accidents and incidents to determine cause and implement plans to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Conduct job sites safety and environmental audits which includes the completion of documentation of compliance and/or corrective actions taken.
  • Administration of the workers compensation insurance program, which includes ensuring proper medical treatment, maintaining the status of their injuries, minimizing the cost of treatment, obtaining releases from treating physicians and coordinating an early return to work.
  • Administer the Safety Awareness Program to ensure a safety culture among the work force.
  • Reviews, recommends and conducts continued training and education of employees in safe and efficient work methods.
  • Maintain Safety Statistic for area of responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • At least three (3) years of previous safety and managerial experience.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and other regulatory agencies, and familiarity with construction.
  • Knowledge of lead or asbestos abatement preferred. Demolition expereince required

General Job Summary: Develop, plan, and implement all health, safety, and environmental programs for the Company. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal health, safety, and environmental regulations. Develop illness and injury prevention, building safety, and chemical safety policies and procedures. Oversee safety training and facility inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 1) Design and maintain company policies adhering to local, state, and federal health, safety, and environmental regulations (OSHA, EPA, DEC, NIOSH, DOT, etc.).
    • a) Keep abreast of any changes to health, safety, and environmental laws and regulations that impact the company, and implement company policies accordingly.
  • 2) Serve as primary contact with all federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulatory bodies, and property and workers compensation insurance representatives.
    • a) Participate in all property and facility inspections conducted by federal, state, and local agencies, and insurance carriers.
  • 3) Ensure necessary Company records are prepared and maintained according to established federal, state, and local safety and environmental guidelines.
    • a) Maintain (in conjunction with Human Resources) associate records and files related to health, safety, and environmental, including training records.
  • 4) Complete and file on a timely basis all federal, state, and local environmental reports and chemical inventory requests, and submit payment requests for all required fees on a timely basis.
  • 5) Prepare, maintain, and update Company’s safety and environmental policy and procedure manuals.
    • a) Provide initial and refresher training for associates on company policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to associate safety, health, and protection from hazards.
    • b) Coordinate the required associate training relating to health, safety, and environmental programs.
  • 6) Develop accident prevention and loss control systems and programs for incorporation into operational Company policies
    • a) Ensure complete and thorough accident investigation, accurate recording of the details, and implementation of corrective action for all work-related injuries and illnesses. Immediately report any work-related injury/illness to the State and the workers compensation insurance carrier.
    • b) Maintain the company’s records of all recordable injuries / illnesses including the OSHA Form 300 log, and post the OSHA Form 300A summary report on a timely basis as required by OSHA.
    • c) Provide company with a weekly summary of all accidents and injuries.
  • 7) Serve as the primary Company contact for the workers compensation insurance carrier.
  • 8) Coordinate Company emergency response and disaster recovery procedures
  • 9) Responsible for identifying chemical hazards and hazardous workplace conditions.
    • a) Maintain a current inventory and Material Safety Data Sheets for all chemical hazards on the property.
    • b) Take corrective action to eliminate, contain, or minimize the hazards, or coordinate the removal of physical, biological, and chemical hazards.
  • 10) Participate in the design and development of facilities, work areas, and work procedures, and make health, safety, and environmental recommendations accordingly.
    • a) Perform job hazard analysis on the introduction of new processes and recommends safe operating suggestions
    • b) Recommend and participate in the purchase of all safety and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • 11) Chair the Safety Committee
  • 12) Oversee the operation and ensure success of Company’s waste treatment facility including staffing, hazardous waste management, and chemical supply administration.
  • 13) Oversee the operation and ensure success of the Company’s security systems and processes.
  • 14) Provide assistance or perform other duties as assigned.

Education: Four-year college degree with a minimum of five years experience in a managerial or technical position in a manufacturing environment with knowledge and proficiency in EHS programs preferred, or a combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. ASP / CSP preferred.

Experience: 5-7 years related experience or training

Personal Characteristics: Ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of medical information. Ability to work well with others, exercise sound judgment, solve problems, work independently and effectively manage workload, and work well under pressure. This associate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be resourceful, well-organized, meticulous, and accurate.

Other Skills: Ability to operate general office equipment including telephone, computer, calculator, photocopier, and fax machine. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office components: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access. Excellent presentation and negotiation skills.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, this associate is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the environment varies from low to moderate. All duties must be performed in compliance with Company policies relating to safety.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to take on a highly visible role and manage the development and deployment of EHS strategies and methods to achieve a zero injury, fatality-free workplace and ensure systems are in place to protect the environment in the
facilities organization on a university campus. You would serve as a key business partner as part of the location's leadership team and provide coaching to the facilities organization to assist in execution of the EHS strategy. In addition, you will supervise the facilities environmental, health, and safety personnel and demonstrate leading, mentoring and coaching of both EHS and facilities organizations.

Qualifications: Our ideal candidate will have:

  • BS degree in safety or closely related field; at least 10 years of progressive EHS experience in multiple facilities with experience in construction; 3-5 years of supervisory experience.   • Knowledge in practical applications of EHS standards; at least 5 years management experience with NFPA standards and emergency response; proven relationship experience w/ NGO’s, OSHA and EPA entities; experience w/ external organizations such as fire departments, ambulance and other emergency responders and inspectors. Demonstrated ability to coach union, plant and line leaders in modeling solid safety leadership.
